about this week’s cover: coldplay’s “the scientist”;
You know that feeling when, you should be confident about something you’ve done, something you love; but then hesitation sets in and you backtrack? I had that this week.
I’ve wanted to do a Coldplay cover or a long time now. The only real reason I put it off was because I couldn’t help thinking to myself: This is Coldplay, Noey. You need to do them justice.
I was a late bloomer in discovering this band. I only ever really set to acquire their songs for my listening pleasure in the latter part of my college years. I had always known of Coldplay. But for the longest time, the best that I could do was sing a couple of lines (usually the chorus) from a handful of songs whose titles tended to elude me. And then a couple of years ago, when a friend linked me to Tanya Chua’s rendition of “Yellow” — I guess you could say that was when I finally “fell” for their music: sound, sense, and the stories they told.
The audio file I’ve put up has actually been sitting in my hard drive for the better part of three days. This is because I was pretty frustrated the night I had set up my keyboard and my computer to record this song. Doing home recordings without a decent microphone is a huge challenge, especially when you record the vocals and the instrumentation all in one go.
Background noise is one of the things I attempt to minimize, and normally I have no trouble with that. I usually record between the hours of 1 to 3am, because this is the time that my neighborhood is pretty much asleep. So when people are driving around revving their engines at an otherwise quiet hour, it can get really annoying. All the more when dogs start barking (not mine, the babies were sleeping with my brothers) in the last few seconds before you finish the song.
So I shelved this mp3 and decided that okay, I’ll put off posting until I put together a ‘better track’. But my succeeding efforts didn’t quite sound right. I know that sounds odd, but I’m considering this as a lesson in just going with my gut and not second-guessing myself, which is something I tend to do a lot of. Because now that I listen to it, I love this track. I love the way it turned out. I hope you guys do too. :)
